Per your lease, all utilities that should be in your name must be in your name on the day your lease starts, and start requests can take several business days, so contact providers as soon as you sign. Providers can vary by address; when in doubt, confirm against your lease, a prior bill, or your city. See Move-In Day for the full move-in process.

Be Home for Gas and Water Activation

The gas company and the city water department typically require the tenant to be at the home to meet them when they activate service. Due to logistics, Location Properties does not send property managers to meet utility activations, so make your own arrangements to be there. For water, we strongly encourage turning off the home's main shutoff valve (that link shows how to find and shut it off) before the meter is activated, then opening it slowly and checking for leaks; a meter that starts running immediately can look like a leak, and the water department may shut it right back off. For gas, ask the technician to light and check the pilot lights on the water heater and fireplace (if you have one) so you know both work before they leave.
